About The Area

The Coral Coast - The Southern most point of the Great Barrier Reef and home to:

  1. Lady Musgrave Island is one of the Gems of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. It is the southern most island of the Bunker Group, situated off the Capricornia coast. The island is a 14ha coral cay with a 1192ha surrounding reef. In 1938 half the Island was declared a national park with the remainder following in 1967.

  2. Lady Elliott Island is a true Coral Cay which has evolved over thousands of years and is an important sea-bird and turtle rookery site. Whales can also be seen passing by from June to October.
The Island is a popular Scuba diving and snorkelling location due to its interesting dive sites.

  3. Woongarra Marine Park was initially established in 1989 to protect the turtle rookeries around Mon Repos. The rookeries provide an invaluable site for nesting loggerheads, but also attract green and flatback turtles that are monitored by Department of Environment and Heritage staff. The Marine Park has an amazing array of marine life, much of which can be accessed from the shore and borders on sub-tropical and temperate zones, from fringing coral (on basalt rock) to nudibranches and sea snakes.

  4. Cochranes Artificial Reef - An area 400m by 800m, approximately 2.5 - 3 nautical miles from the rocky coastline (within the Woongarra Marine Park) has been set aside for the site of the Cochrane Artificial Reef. To date, it is the only artificial reef that has been approved in an existing marine national park in Australia.

  5. Relatively close to the shore, the Cochrane Artificial Reef is also the destination for many fishermen. Many species of sport and table fish are caught, including snapper, parrot, trout, moses perch, mangrove jacks, estuary cod and pelagic species.

  6. Scuba divers also report regular sightings of a variety of other marine life including dolphins, turtles, manta rays, wobbegongs (carpet sharks), docile leopard sharks, batfish and the list goes on. Over the years the family of groper has grown from the original two that were spotted regularly by divers, to the six that are now often seen hovering just within vision range.

  7. Mon Repos turtle rookery - between November and March, take a night tour to see the majestic turtles make their way up the beach to lay their eggs, or see the hatchlings make their way to the sea, starting their life as Coral Coast locals.
